in reply to Name Space

"My username is..." poll has reminded me that I have to explain my nickname.

As you might already know, I am Lithuanian (which you could have found out through my home node). Moxliukas is not Lithuanian word strictly speaking, because there is no letter 'x' in Lithuanian language, however it is just a weird way of spelling the word moksliukas. You might ask why am I spelling it like that. The answer is not related to the usual scenario where moksliukas would be taken on every single website. The problem that I had with the nick "moksliukas" (which I have used for quite a while... probably for 4 years) is that it was too long for IRC (back in those days Lithuanian IRC servers only accepted nicknames up to 9 letters long), so I shortened 'ks' into 'x'.

What does the word moxliukas mean, anyway? The closest translation to a single english word would be a geek, however the roots of the word are quite different in Lithuanian and the meaning is also subtly different. My nickname has it's roots in the word 'mokslas', which means science. 'Moksliukas' is a person who studies a lot (usually at school) compared to his peers. It has a slightly negative meaning (slightly nerdy). The nickname stuck because, well... I probably was a bit geeky/nerdy at school. A lot of people get surprised to find out that my nick is 'moxliukas' because I am 20 now, ant usually this word is reffered to schoolchildren, but I've had it for 6 years now, so I got used to it
