As a long time student of Saints in our Book, I noticed something unusual today, so unusual I took a snapshot of it before it disappeared:

Two adjacent monks in Saints in our Book with identical number of Writeups! Never seen that before.

planetscape, after more than ten long years at the monastery, we wind up together on 1282 posts apiece, at least for a little while. I'm very happy about that because I've always enjoyed your thoughtful and insightful posts.

Update: July 08 2015, exactly level now, both XP and Writeups! :) :) :)

    ::blush::

    Not sure what to say. I find myself in illustrious company, mostly by my diligence of showing up and voting. ;-) Quite the coincidence, though!

    Ostensibly, noticing this anomaly caused this post. However, considering you have 1282 now which is after this very post, the listing wasn't true until after it was posted. Meaning, it was a reaction to a planned state. I'm so confused. :)

      Well spotted and yes it was planned. Permit me some artistic license. :) I noticed a few days ago that I was steadily gaining on planetscape and was about to reply to the Agile Imposition thread when I realized that would spoil the artistic effect of this thread ... so I thought I'd better make the planetscape post first, then respond to the Agile Imposition thread later.

      And now, thanks to replying to you here, planetscape and I are back on level terms again, this time at 1283 nodes apiece. So I will delay my reply to the Agile Imposition thread again. In fact, in all this excitement, I've forgotten what I was going to say in that thread. :)

        when I realized that would spoil the artistic effect of this post

        ha!

        So I will delay my reply to the Agile Imposition thread again.

        *tickle*, *tickle*

        Shamelessly, i'll quote my own poem:

        Am i wrong to say i care?
        Or any time i look what's there?
        Or where i rank inside the Book,
        Not that i'll admit i look.

        Oh dear. Well I suppose I shall have to post more now, to keep our delightful eyepopslikeamosquito talking!

        HTH,

    I'd rather you replied than used a hidden update like that. Almost missed this one. :)

    Anyway, tracking such things take just a little effort, but can nonetheless be done easily. Here it is with Firefox, Notepad++, and Oracle.

    1. Copy the table from Saints in our Book
    2. Regex replace ^(\S+)(\s)([^\t]+)(\s)(\S+)(\s)(\S+\s\S+)(\s\S+).+ with \t SELECT \1,\2'\3',\4\5,\6'\7',\8 FROM Dual UNION ALL
    3. Replace None with 0
    4. Dress up the data in a CTE
    5. Add other CTEs to help

    Now we have:

    Now for some useless data:

    SELECT (SELECT COUNT(COUNT(*)) FROM Data GROUP BY XP, Writeups HAVING +Count(*) > 1) Both, (SELECT COUNT(*) FROM Close) Close, (SELECT COUNT(COUNT(*)) FROM Data GROUP BY XP HAVING Count(*) > 1) + XP, XP_Diff_Min, XP_Diff_Max, XP_Diff_Avg, (SELECT COUNT(COUNT(*)) FROM Data GROUP BY Writeups HAVING Count(* +) > 1) Writeups, Writeups_Diff_Min, Writeups_Diff_Max, Writeups_Diff_Avg FROM MMA;

    Results in (2015/07/10, 2015/07/20, 2015/07/29, 2015/09/02, 2016/01/06, 2016/03/09, 2016/05/03, 2016/06/01, 2016/7/22):

    BOTH CLOSE XP XP_DIFF_MIN XP_DIFF_MAX XP_DIFF_AVG + WRITEUPS WRITEUPS_DIFF_MIN WRITEUPS_DIFF_MAX WRITEUPS_DIFF_AVG ---------- ---------- ---------- ----------- ----------- ----------- - +--------- ----------------- ----------------- ----------------- 0 7 31 0 851484 1468.48538 + 135 -56940 56902 .545321637 1 5 34 0 851046 1466.34161 + 132 -56940 56902 .544525547 1 6 30 0 850755 1466.34161 + 132 -56940 56902 .544525547 0 4 30 0 849885 1462.07569 + 128 -56761 56940 .54294032 0 10 27 0 847648 1453.62373 + 135 -56761 56940 .781476122 0 11 37 0 847042 1453.62952 + 127 -56761 56940 .781476122 0 5 30 0 845891 1451.52457 + 135 -56761 56940 .780346821 1 7 30 0 845449 1449.4329 + 127 -56761 56940 .779220779 1 8 33 0 844286 1449.44733 + 130 -56761 56940 .779220779

    To see the actual listings of those that are close:

    SELECT Data.Ranking, Data.Name, Data.XP, Data.Title, Data.Writeups FROM Data, Close WHERE Data.Ranking BETWEEN Close.Ranking AND Close.Ranking + 1 ORDER BY Data.Ranking;
    RANKING NAME XP TITLE WRITEUPS ---------- -------------------- ---------- --------------- ---------- 37 eyepopslikeamosquito 29895 Canon (20) 1289 38 planetscape 29894 Canon (20) 1289 412 ChemBoy 4651 Priest (14) 282 413 danger 4645 Priest (14) 280 426 fisher 4535 Priest (14) 152 427 Theo 4529 Priest (14) 154 510 OeufMayo 3800 Curate (13) 146 511 lin0 3799 Curate (13) 149 567 logan 3522 Curate (13) 169 568 mandog 3522 Curate (13) 167 642 jaredor 3187 Curate (13) 42 643 Daruma 3186 Curate (13) 41 664 csuhockey3 3086 Curate (13) 122 665 giulienk 3085 Curate (13) 122 14 rows selected.

    Obviously, you can change the definition of "close" in the CTE.

    As long as the database supports analytical functions, this ought to work outside Oracle. But, you'll llikely have to remove " FROM Dual" or add a Dual CTE, like: Dual AS (SELECT Null).

    Update 2014/07/20: Transposed backwards XP and Writeups! Some of the results are different.

    Two adjacent monks in Saints in our Book with identical number of Writeups! Never seen that before.

    Oddly enough, it has happened again. This time, for two users who have not logged in in quite some time (devil's in the details):

    # User Experience Level Writeups User Since Lest here
    665 csuhockey3 3086 Curate (13) 122 2002-01-05 17:31 7 years ago
    666 giulienk 3086 Curate (13) 122 2001-09-23 10:59 9 years ago

      After noticing a few days ago that they were very close, I confess I upvoted one of these monk's nodes to make them exactly equal. Sorry, couldn't resist. Given they have both not been here for 7+ years, there is a good chance they will stay locked together for eternity. :)

      Update: At 30 Sep 2023 we see:

      711 csuhockey3 3095 Curate (13) 122 2002-01-05 22:31 15 years ag +o 712 giulienk 3095 Curate (13) 121 2001-09-23 14:59 17 years ag +o 713 rnahi 3093 Curate (13) 124 2002-03-09 16:33 16 years ag +o 714 BooK 3090 Curate (13) 119 2000-07-10 02:33 37 weeks ag +o

      That's quite a remarkable gang of four, very close on both XP and number of posts!

      But how is it possible for giulienk today to have one fewer posts (121) than he had in 2015?

        I also voted on one, but not recently, when reviewing old polls.

        We can work on others, should you so desire. :)

    I'm fascinated by this as well. :)

    so unusual I took a snapshot of it before it disappeared

    I'm kind of embarrassed i missed this the first time around. I originally understood the similarity (before the update) where the XP was the same. Being just 100 off, i simply didn't see it. I reread your post for some odd reason, and saw it was originally just Writeups.

    Anyway, just having adjacent monks with the same amount of Writeups is not unusual at all. There are current 34 sets:

    Update: So stupid. I made the same mistake again. That is, mixing up XP and Writeups. And i thought i fixed that. Anyway, the list above is similar XP, not Writeups. There's only one set of adjacent monks with similar Writeups.

    To find one's that are really close, use the following query off the CTE:

    SELECT A.Ranking, A.Name, A.XP, A.Title, A.Writeups FROM Data A, Data B WHERE B.Ranking IN(A.Ranking + 1, A.Ranking - 1) AND B.Writeups BETWEEN A.Writeups - 5 AND A.Writeups + 5 ORDER BY Ranking;
