As a long time student of Saints in our Book, I noticed something unusual today, so unusual I took a snapshot of it before it disappeared:

Two adjacent monks in Saints in our Book with identical number of Writeups! Never seen that before.

planetscape, after more than ten long years at the monastery, we wind up together on 1282 posts apiece, at least for a little while. I'm very happy about that because I've always enjoyed your thoughtful and insightful posts.

Update: July 08 2015, exactly level now, both XP and Writeups! :) :) :)

Ostensibly, noticing this anomaly caused this post. However, considering you have 1282 now which is after this very post, the listing wasn't true until after it was posted. Meaning, it was a reaction to a planned state. I'm so confused. :)

Well spotted and yes it was planned. Permit me some artistic license. :) I noticed a few days ago that I was steadily gaining on planetscape and was about to reply to the Agile Imposition thread when I realized that would spoil the artistic effect of this thread ... so I thought I'd better make the planetscape post first, then respond to the Agile Imposition thread later.

And now, thanks to replying to you here, planetscape and I are back on level terms again, this time at 1283 nodes apiece. So I will delay my reply to the Agile Imposition thread again. In fact, in all this excitement, I've forgotten what I was going to say in that thread. :)

I'd rather you replied than used a hidden update like that. Almost missed this one. :)

Anyway, tracking such things take just a little effort, but can nonetheless be done easily. Here it is with Firefox, Notepad++, and Oracle.

Copy the table from Saints in our Book
Regex replace ^(\S+)(\s)([^\t]+)(\s)(\S+)(\s)(\S+\s\S+)(\s\S+).+ with \t SELECT \1,\2'\3',\4\5,\6'\7',\8 FROM Dual UNION ALL
Replace None with 0
Dress up the data in a CTE
Add other CTEs to help

Obviously, you can change the definition of "close" in the CTE.

As long as the database supports analytical functions, this ought to work outside Oracle. But, you'll llikely have to remove " FROM Dual" or add a Dual CTE, like: Dual AS (SELECT Null).

Update 2014/07/20: Transposed backwards XP and Writeups! Some of the results are different.

After noticing a few days ago that they were very close, I confess I upvoted one of these monk's nodes to make them exactly equal. Sorry, couldn't resist. Given they have both not been here for 7+ years, there is a good chance they will stay locked together for eternity. :)

I'm kind of embarrassed i missed this the first time around. I originally understood the similarity (before the update) where the XP was the same. Being just 100 off, i simply didn't see it. I reread your post for some odd reason, and saw it was originally just Writeups.

Anyway, just having adjacent monks with the same amount of Writeups is not unusual at all. There are current 34 sets:
