in reply to Re^2: Auto NodeReaper Approval (why?)
in thread Auto NodeReaper Approval

There sems to be a misunderstanding. You will see in What is moderation? that "Approval", also called "Moderation" (see the "moderate" on that button in the "moderation nodelet" called "Approval nodelet" to make the confusion complete.)...
... is meant to bless a node into one of the PM sections.

The reason of the moderation process is to prevent monk discussions to appear in the code section etc.

Give it some thought and you will see, it's no use for a NodeReaper posting (a deleting or reaping) of a node to appear in any section at all.

At least that's my conclusion. Why would you want it there?
Otoh you might argue why there's an option to approve such a node then.

My thought is not really to keep it there. I guess I'm too anal to allow things to hang around. I like things neat and tidy. Why should the Reaper node sit at the bottom of the page? Why should it be there in the first place. Kill it. Aprove it. Don't have it in there in the first place, I don't know. It just kind of bugs me that a seperate (or replacement node) sits in moderation just kind of hanging out. Are we suppose to take care of these as clean minded (janitorial service that we are) individuals? Or should we just let them hang out and clutter the bottom of the page? Wouldn't it just be easier for this type of node to self destruct or get moved on to its final resting ground?

Please don't read this as a flame of any sort. I'm just trying, like everyone else who frequents these pages, to make it a better place to swap state (read -- Perl Hacker) secrets.

You're so sly, but so am I. - Quote from the movie Manhunter.

If it were a good thing to have *nothing* sit unapproved, then we'd just eliminate the whole approval process.

If your anal nature prevents you from leaving any node unapproved, then you *need* to stop visiting pages like Seekers of Perl Wisdom. (I thought there was something in user settings to turn off showing you nodes yet to be approved, but there isn't.)

You aren't doing a service to the site by approving every single node without regard for whether it should be approved or not. You are doing a *disservice*. What do you think approval is for? What do you think it does (beside remove the node from the bottom of the page)? Did you read any / much / all of the site documentation on the approval process?

BTW, your approvals of reaped nodes should have done nothing. Only editors are supposed to be able to approve reaped nodes (after you answer my questions above I'll even explain why). So one more bug to fix.

FYI, this reinforces my plan to get rid of approval and replace it with disapproval.

      - tye

tye, I think you totally summed up what I was asking in the first place, and maybe wasn't getting my point accross. The whole purpose of my original question was to make sure that I was doing things right for the site. I like the idea of a "disapproved" selection, because I have found nodes that I believe need some help. I have read the site documentation on the approval process.

Only editors are supposed to be able to approve reaped nodes.

I don't want to, nor have I ever tried to approve a reaped, only the Reaper owned nodes that appear after the reaped node is replaced. My original question only applies to those Reaper nodes that appear in the approval/moderation portion of the page. Should the Reaper nodes be unmoderated? I think that it should, because it provides only an informational source, not a content source of the original message. Isn't it just a placeholder of the original message? I also think that these nodes should have the ++/-- radials taken off of them. No need to vote on them. (Not that I have!!)

In the mean time, I will no longer approve any of the Reaper nodes. I don't want to create any problems for the site, I am only trying to make it better. Thanks tye, chromatic and Happy-the-monk, I appreciate the clarifications and the opportunity to correspond with each of you.
