Resolution Time is Nigh

Fellow Monks, the yearly Monastery Ritual of reflecting on the past year and casting hopes, wishes and prayers into the next is but weeks away. Prepare yourselves, be that by ritual cleansing (including, but not limited to removing old stuff from /tmp), or fortification by strong, appropriate drink. Review now your resolutions of old, and seize whatever low-hanging fish are available to you to achieve those resolutions before the Great Celestial Engine renders up its yearly "Bing!"

Go now, and be at Peace. But be quick about it.

Update: Monks are reminded that "nigh" means "near", not "now", though bringing in your resolutions ahead of schedule would save time for holiday shopping.

to rearrange the way I write code to perform more unit testing, to use revision control for everything, not just the important stuff, to learn `zsh`, because people laugh at me when I tell them I use `bash` (... I think I resolved to do this last year, hmmmmm), to not laugh at people who use `emacs`, to download Parrot and play with it to try and review some more CPAN modules (URL added to clarify bart's question), and to upload to CPAN a number of modules I have lying around (some of them are even useful!). • to try and review some more CPAN modules, If by review you mean take a look at, not necessarily write reviews, then you can start now by checking out the Perl Advent Calendar. One pointer to an interesting module a day until Christmas, a nice, gentle introduction, and a cute real world example to boot. Highly recommended.	[reply]

I resolve to: Use Linux more frequently at home. Try at least two more Linux distributions. Start using CVS at home. Increase the amount of documentation for all of the code that I write as well ensure that it is easier to understand. Um... Mr. Muskrat's eyes roll up into his head and his face scrunches up in an odd sort of way as he scratches his head. Remember what it was that I was going to put in this spot but forgot before I could type it up.	[reply]

my 2p :) Use Linux more at home Be nicer to people Succeeded this year so going to work more on that for next year. However, my fall from grace at work seems set to continue: Continue developing in .NET and move away from *Nix Re-purpose a lot of my code in C# and HTAs However I think I can save myself with: Relearn c/C++ and build some perl extensions Finally build all those module ideas I have and release to CPAN. I realize I was starting to get bored with my life, and then it hit me. Instead of anxiuously searching for new grounds to venture, I first want to tie up the loose ends, and pick up the things which I have dropped over the years, because they were getting too big for me at the time, and this time, complete going through them. These include, not in a particular order: LAOLA/OLE::Storage: MS Office file formats Generating PDF: PDF::Create, PDF::API2 Parsing/code transformation: Parse::RecDescent, Parser::Yapp, Bison, Perl::Tidy JPEG file format RTF POE	[reply]

Below are are "techie" resolutions for the next year, in no particular order... Finish those modules that have been hanging around for a while. Make a meaningful effort to work on project management. Use Linux more at home. Visit #perlmonks more. Study parrot more. Get through Embedding and Extending Perl.	[reply]

Ah, yearly resolutions. I've kept my only resolution from many years ago...not to many any more New Year's Resolutions. Why? Because, IMO, it shouldn't take some celestial event to get me to re-evaluate myself. I try to make it a part of my daily life. I try to look at myself and ask, "what is good, what is not so good, and what needs changing." (Please no diaper jokes) Though, there are a few current things on my list: Buy a house. Find some formal training in Solaris Admin. Control my temper more. That should be good enough for now. And a very happy holiday season to all of you whatever you celebrate.	[reply]

As much as I love PERL, on the Great Celestial Engine scale, PERL doesn't eve register. Cherish the journey one has been set upon, the destination truly unknown. When something seems vastly important or overwhelming, know this, you will handle everything life throws at you in one way or another. Uncertainty is the basis of the balckest dispair as well as the basis for eternal hope. How can such a simple mind as mine resolve (promise) to do anything but take the next step in my journey, confident that it will be different from the last one, judging it (imperfectly), and if it was a bad step, change direction, if it was a good step, try another in the same direction learning as I go along. As my journey continues, it appears that the important bits are those where my path joins with that of another, each path altered, forever, by the time spent walking together. Life itself becomes less important than the journey taken during that life, for the journey of one life is finite, with a beginning and an end, but all of the other lives who's journey's were altered by joining, crossing, or parralleling yours, continue infinately in every direction. dws, you are right, I should resolve, and I do. Enjoy the journey, each moment treasured as though it will be the last, for it is the last time you will experience that moment without the filters of memory. dageek	[reply]
