Given some of what you say perhaps you should look into an excellent mountain bicycle called the "Off Road Toad" (which I cant seem to find a decent link to, but whatever..)

Btw, when I was a courier I rode a Klein or did until I cracked the frame :-( , but also rode KHS (nice bike) and Marin as well as a GT for a while.
