Some of you may have noticed the announcement at yetanother.org regarding Perl Monks and Yet Another Society. The details are not 100% set yet but I thought I'd let you in on what has been going on.

Yet Another Society and BSI (EDC's parent company) have long been closely associated. YAS's mailing address is in Holland and both are sustained by Kurt the Pope. Since we decided that PM was no longer a for-profit venture it seemed to make sense to allow people (and BSI) to be able tax-deduct their contributions towards the operating costs of the site.

The power structure for the site will remain unchanged. I will maintain my status as the (hopefully) beneficent dictator. We will not be changing currency here. 1,000,000 XP and $1.09 will still buy you a 20oz bottle of Fruitopia at your neighborhood Mobil station.

A lot of the specifics remain to be hashed out. This is however in general what will likely happen. I'll keep you posted.

Since you brought up the contributions, how about we get the StatMeister to add a new one: Donations made to the Monastery. We could use that to either congratulate ourselves on helping keeping the home phosphors burning or use them to encourage additional input from the faithful.

I see it as being completely anonymous. Similar to the KWDF, but without the names. Just a date, an amount and a running total.

Sure, it's useless...but I wonder if it wouldn't help kick a few more tokens out of the pockets of those that haven't contributed--especially those that can afford to.

(And, to satisfy the glass-house patrol...yes, I already did.)

I like footpad's idea, but I would also like a simplistic gauge of if the site is in the red or not. How much does it cost to keep PM running? Is the donation plate helping? Do I need to start donating more frequently? I would hate to see the monastery close due to lack of funding.

I definitely like the red/black indicator idea. It would provide a nice, simple indicator of the "health" of the site. I'm worried that if a dollar amount gets attached to the site, it's nature might change, quite possibly for the worse. (Money is the root of greed and many other evils).
